Happy employees make happy residents, right? It has become clearer that attention needs to be paid to the health and wellness of nursing assistants in senior care. They form the army that provides the most direct, hands-on care for millions of seniors in skilled nursing, assisted living, home health and hospice. But what brings them the most satisfaction and increases their well-being?
A recent study published in The Gerontologist examined this question and found that three relationships affected their emotional well-being more than anything else. They include relationships with their clients, families, and supervisors. Let’s take a closer look at each.
Nursing assistants reported that close and trusting relationships were among the most important things that affected both their well-being as well as performing quality care. Close relationships tend to be emotionally gratifying and after care is provided, seeing a smile on the senior’s face gave them pride and a sense of accomplishment.
In terms of relationships with client’s family members, nursing assistants reported feelings of satisfaction and accomplishment when they received positive feedback regarding the quality of care they delivered. Even during times of stress and strain, nursing assistants said they felt more appreciated and respected when family members showed gratitude.
When it came to relationships with supervisors, nursing assistants reported satisfaction when they were shown empathy and respect from their supervisors. They also felt satisfaction when their direct supervisors supported them in scheduling time off and when they needed support or guidance regarding resident or family issues.
As one might imagine, when nursing assistants experienced lack of closeness or bonds with residents and families or a lack of support from supervisors, their well-being and job satisfaction suffered.
Helping boost your nursing assistant’s well-being and job satisfaction, can be as easy as 1, 2, 3. Help them develop good relationships and provide the types of support they need.
