Researchers are looking into the impact that CBD may have on a condition that used to be called alcoholism and is now referred to as alcohol use disorder. While most results are based on animal studies, there is some limited research on humans.

Alcohol use disorder or AUD, is a condition in which an individual feels the need to consume alcohol even when the behavior is negatively affecting his or her life. This condition affects adults and younger people and is associated with alcohol-related liver disease, depression, cancer, stroke and heart disease. Alcohol-related liver disease can develop due to chronic consumption of alcohol for long periods of time. Essentially, alcohol puts a devastating strain of the liver, causing severe inflammation and liver failure, leading to earlier mortality.

So, what’s the connection between CBD and AUD? While research is in its infancy in this area, some studies are showing promising results.

The Role of the Endocannabinoid System
All humans and animals possess an endocannabinoid system which is thought to be responsible for balancing systems of the body and brain. It is made up of endocannabinoid receptors, endocannabinoids and various enzymes. CBD is only one of what is believed to be over 140 endocannabinoids that go to work and then break down by enzymes.
Two receptors – CB1 and C2 are believed to play a significant role in alcohol use disorder, and because of this, researchers are trying to find CBD-based treatments that will help with the condition. Endocannabinoid levels may be impaired through chronic use of alcohol as well as withdrawal from the substance.

Alcohol use disorder affects a large portion of the U.S. population, roughly five percent.
