Health Benefits of Chamomile

One of the most ancient medicinal herbs known for its preventive and healing properties is chamomile. Most people drink it as a tea although essential oils of chamomile are also used in aromatherapy and many cosmetics.

Chamomile is a member of the daisy family and has been used for thousands of years to treat a variety of health issues. The fact that it is still widely used around the world today is evidence that it works and has few to no toxic side effects. The flowers of the chamomile plant contain hundreds of small molecules including terpenes and flavonoids, which both have medicinal value.

This wonderful and ancient plant has received lots of attention in research. Studies show that chamomile has anti-inflammatory properties, especially when it is used as a topical. An article in the journal Molecular Medicine Reports list many conditions which may be improved with chamomile including:

  • Cancer
  • Common cold
  • Cardiovascular issues
  • Eczema
  • Gastrointestinal issues
  • Osteoporosis
  • Sleep
  • Anxiety
  • Seizures
  • Diabetes

The authors also note that some people may be allergic to chamomile, especially those sensitive to ragweed or chrysanthemums.

Chamomile comes in many forms. Topically, it is used in skin moisturizers, toners, and cleansers. There are a wide variety of chamomile teas to choose from and in terms of supplements, it’s available in capsule, powder, extract, and oil.

Like most herbal supplements, chamomile is meant to be taken for a long period of time. There is no standard dose, but most research indicates that it is safe to take between 220 milligrams to 1600 milligrams daily. Some people drink anywhere from 1 to 4 cups of chamomile tea per day. The amount consumed depends upon the individual’s health issues or symptoms. Always remember to ask your healthcare provider before beginning any new supplement.
