Great leaders in business can teach today’s leaders how to become better and more skilled in their roles in the workplace. From the great Industrialists to modern day business people, there is a great deal to learn, but being a great leader means being a lifetime learner.
Create Great Employees Out of Average Workers
An effective leader today knows that it takes a team of talent to get things done right. A particularly valuable talent involves seeking average employees and mentoring them into more than they thought they could become. Industrialist John D. Rockefeller said that “Good management consists of showing average people how to do the work of superior people”. Have you lifted an employee to new heights lately?
Make Them Feel Good About Themselves
Happy employees are more engaged and feel more committed to the mission, no matter what it may be. An effective way of increasing satisfaction among your staff is to make them feel good about themselves and their role in the company. Sam Walton, founder of Wal-Mart, said “Outstanding leaders go out of their way to boost self-esteem of their personnel. If people believe in themselves, it’s amazing what they can accomplish”. Have you made an employee feel good about themselves lately?
Be a Teacher
Great leaders have the ability to educate and train their staff in ways that will leave a lasting impact. Today’s workplace must engage in continual learning or risk falling behind competitors. Jack Welch said, “An organization’s ability to learn, and translate that learning into action rapidly, is the ultimate competitive advantage”. How do you rank yourself as a teacher to your staff?
You Have to Keep Moving
Successful leaders know that knowledge is one thing and action is another. No great idea goes anywhere unless it is properly executed. Conrad Hilton, founder of Hilton Hotels, said “Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don’t quit”. I personally know of a successful business leader who likes to see his management make mistakes because it indicates that they are always moving, acting and trying. Are you moving, acting and trying new things?
Final Thoughts on Leadership Lessons from Some of the Greatest Business Minds
Lessons on leadership can be found everywhere, from historical leaders like Winston Churchill and Martin Luther King, Jr., to athletes including Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky and coaches like Vincent Lombardi, John Wooden, Don Shula and Chuck Noll. We can also learn a lot from business leaders from the past and present like John. D. Rockefeller, Sam Walton and Jack Welch.
What business needs right now are prepared, intelligent and talented leaders to take average employees and transform them into great professionals. Today’s leaders must show heart and empathy towards their team and make employees feel good about themselves and their jobs. Leaders should teach and mentor their staff and always keep moving, try new things and never quit.
